Authoritarianism in the Asian region has been slowly reborn. This condition is marked by the emergence of authoritarian leaders as ‘new idols’ for the community. Strong support also flows to these leaders through their success in becoming winners in the event of the general election democracy party.
These leaders bring ammunition in the form of populist discourse to gain massive profits while at the same time weakening the opposition’s position. Ironically, the record of past human rights violations shows that these leaders were involved, even played a major role in it. This recent phenomenon becomes important to pay attention to because it risks the fate of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region in the future.
With these concerns, the Master of Human Rights and Democratization (MHRD) of the Department of Politics and Government held a webinar series in the form of public lectures to explore the emerging trend of authoritarianism and threaten the fate and values of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region. This public lecture was conducted using case studies in five countries in the Asian-Pasific region:
