Haryanto has taught at the Department of Politics and Government since 1980. He received his undergraduate degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada; his master's degree from Atenao de Manila University, Philippines; and his doctorate degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada (2013). His research interests and expertise include social movements, elites, ethnicity, and conflict management. His publications include Politik Kain Timur: Instrumen Meraih Kekuasaan (The Politics of Eastern Cloth: An Instrument for Gaining Power, PolGov, 2015), Elit, Massa dan Kekuasaan: Suatu Bahasan Pengantar (The Elites, The Masses, and Power: An Introduction, PolGov, 2017), and Sosialisasi Politik: Suatu Pemahaman Awal (Political Socialisation: An Introductory Understanding, PolGov, 2018). His most recent publication is Asymmetrical Decentralisation, Representation, and Legitimacy in Indonesia: A Case Study of the Majelis Rakyat Papua in Asian Survey.
